Ozone Injection Pilot Test
Rhea was tasked with an ozone injection pilot test at the Gottschalk Marina (GCM) aboard Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune. The goal of the pilot test was to determine the feasibility of using ozone injections at the GCM site and other similar Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricant (POL) sites aboard MCB Camp Lejeune.
In order to test the effectiveness in using ozone for remediation at POL sites, Rhea had to choose a site which contained features and contaminants of concern (COC) similar to a wide variety of POL sites. Rhea chose the GCM site to perform the pilot test based on the presence of both asphalt and grass covered areas and the presence of representative COCs. Rhea, along with our subcontractors, prepared multiple calculations and injections scenarios to provide the maximum the amount of ozone that could be injected for the pilot test within strict budgetary time constraints.
Rhea’s pilot test reduced COCs at the site by as much as 80 percent in the first treatment. Rhea’s observations during the pilot test regarding potential pathways for ozone loss will help future projects by spotting these areas prior to testing and injection so that they can be corrected to limit the amount of ozone lost during sparging. Additionally, Rhea demonstrated that with ozone treatment, site contaminant levels could be decreased to more rigorous cleanup levels negating the need for Land Use Restrictions (LUR) as part of the site closure.
