National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Compliance Support Services
Rhea was contracted by a commercial client to provide National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Compliance Support Services and conduct the associated semi-annual sampling and analysis activities at two outfalls for a General Permit for Discharges of Stormwater Associated with Industrial Activity (NPDES Permit).
Rhea contacted the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Northwest Regional Office (NWRO) to determine the actions needed to achieve compliance with the NPDES Permit. Following discussions with the PADEP NWRO, Rhea performed a site visit to visually inspect outfalls and observe site conditions. Subsequent to the site visit, Rhea prepared an annual inspection letter report and permit submission package.
Additionally, Rhea conducted semi-annual sampling and analysis activities at two outfalls at the site, as determined by the NPDES Permit. Grab samples from the two outfalls were collected using laboratory-supplied containers. Laboratory analysis of the grab samples included total kjeldahl nitrogen, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, oil/grease, copper, mercury, pH, and total iron. Rhea coordinated the sampling events with the client to ensure adequate flow conditions.
Through discussions with the PADEP NWRO and the client, and collecting the appropriate data through field work, Rhea was able to achieve compliance with the NPDES Permit by submitting a permit package, annual report, and sample analytical results to the PADEP. Additionally, Rhea provided the client with a NPDES Compliance Checklist to ensure that deadlines and deliverables are met in order for the facility to remain in compliance with their permit.
