Asphalt Rehabilitation + Playground Development

Rhea was contracted by the Pittsburgh Public Schools to provide engineering services for asphalt rehabilitation and design of a new playground area. In preparation for construction activities, Rhea prepared a Stormwater Management Report for the City of Pittsburgh Department of City Planning, as well as obtained a City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) Right of Way (ROW) encroachment permit for driveway repairs. Additionally, an Erosion & Sediment Control (E&S) Plan was submitted to the Allegheny County Conservation District for review and approval.

Rhea designed the redevelopment of an existing 0.87-acre parking lot, which included new stormwater inlets and piping, built-in recessed planters encased within concrete curbs, new asphalt surface for both parking spaces and an existing basketball court, and the installation of chain-link fencing. Approximately half of the existing asphalt parking lot was removed for the creation of a lawn area that now serves as a new playground, walking path, and seating area.

Rhea worked closely with the Department of City Planning on the landscaping and parking lot striping design to ensure the most efficient, yet aesthetically pleasing design was created for the school. The construction of the asphalt parking lot and lawn area was completed in Summer 2022. The playground benches, pathways, and equipment were finalized in the Summer of 2023
