Introducing Rhea’s 2023 Scholarship Winner: Haleigh McCalla

Congratulations to Haleigh McCalla, the winner of Rhea’s 2023 Scholarship!

Every year, our employees’ college-bound kids can participate in the Rhea scholarship program. Each participating student submits an essay on that year’s theme, and eligible students earn a $1,000 scholarship sent directly to their school of choice. The winning essay also earns a $500 hand money prize.

Inspired by several recent high-profile disasters, the 2023 essay prompt asked the students, “How do environmental regulations protect us from spills and other disasters? Do our current policies go too far or not far enough?

This year’s winning essay was written by Haleigh McCalla, whose community in eastern Ohio was directly impacted by the train derailment and hazardous chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio earlier this year. In her essay, Haleigh drew from those experiences to argue for a pragmatic balance between necessary environmental protections and our economic needs.

In the fall, Haleigh will begin her studies at the University of Mount Union, where she will also continue her impressive softball career.

Congratulations, Haleigh! We can’t wait to see what you achieve next!
