Leaking Underground Storage Tank Remediation Design + Management

When two underground storage tanks (USTs) were removed from a Virginia military installation, soil and groundwater samples revealed that heating oil had leaked from the tanks into the surrounding area. The contractor originally tasked with site characterization and remediation recommended that no further action was required and submitted a UST Closure report to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ). The VDEQ did not concur with their recommendations and required further investigation at the sites.

Rhea took over site investigation activities in 2017. Rhea installed monitoring wells and vapor probes and analyzed soil, groundwater, and soil gas samples. Aggressive fluid vapor recovery was performed by our subcontractor to remove contaminants from one site. Our team sampled, analyzed, and profiled waste streams to determine disposal options, prepared reports for each site, and achieved case closure status from the VDEQ for both sites.
