Rhea oversaw a complex dam maintenance project, including the controlled drawdown of the reservoir, and developed plans to deal with seepage, erosion, and overgrown vegetation at the site.

Dam Maintenance Program Development + Implementation

Rhea provided engineering support for the clearing, grubbing, and maintenance of a South Carolina dam. The dam was affected by significant seepage, and overgrown vegetation threatened the structural integrity of the dam and spillway. To protect the dam and reservoir, Rhea developed plans to prevent stormwater pollution, manage vegetation, prevent seepage, and control erosion. These plans included detailed geotechnical calculations, AutoCAD drawings, and specifications using SpecsIntact. Intrusive vegetation was removed and replaced with stabilizing grasses that will not impact the structural integrity of the dam. In addition, Rhea conducted a ground-penetrating radar survey that successfully identified an asbestos cement drainage pipe that would have been invisible to conventional pipe location technology.

Rhea safely oversaw a controlled drawdown of the reservoir in order to reduce seepage during maintenance and completed all necessary work on budget and ahead of schedule.
